DOMS stands for Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. It is usually felt 12-72 hours following exercise, and often lasts for around 96 hours, though this can be longer. DOMS is a sensation of soreness, tenderness, and stiffness that can make you feel like you’ve had a productive session.

But do not be put off. This type of muscle stiffness or achiness is normal, does not last long, and is actually a sign of your improving fitness.

How can I treat DOMS?

There's no one simple way to treat DOMS. Nothing is proven to be completely effective, but there are some things that can help relieve the symptoms including:

  • ice packs
  • painkillers
  • massage
